Could Warhorse Be Heading to Middle-earth?
After delivering two critically acclaimed Kingdom Come RPGs, Czech developer Warhorse Studios is now at the center of an exciting rumor: could their next project take players to Middle-earth?
The speculation is still unconfirmed, but fans recently got a small tease during a Reddit AMA. When asked directly about a potential Lord of the Rings game, the studio responded cautiously:
“We cannot really disclose our future plans 🙂 But we are staying in RPG genre!”
That alone is enough to get RPG fans buzzing—but there’s more. Warhorse doubled down on their direction, saying:
“Like any good game studio, we’re working on a new game. We don’t want to stray far from what we know, so we’ll be sticking with RPGs for now.”
A “Huge, Immersive RPG” in Development
Naturally, fans pushed further—hoping for confirmation about a Lord of the Rings connection. While Warhorse didn’t name the project, they did hint at its scale:
“We are hard at work on … something. I cannot disclose details but I can tell it is a huge, immersive RPG.”
That description certainly fits the bill for a Middle-earth adventure, though nothing official has been announced.
Where Did the Rumor Start?
The speculation originally surfaced from the Tolkien Polska podcast, which suggested Warhorse might be working within the Lord of the Rings universe.
Adding fuel to the fire is the studio’s ownership structure. Warhorse is part of Plaion, itself owned by Embracer Group—a company that currently holds the gaming rights to The Lord of the Rings franchise.
Multiple LOTR Games Could Be in the Works
Warhorse might not be the only studio exploring Middle-earth. Reports indicate that Crystal Dynamics—best known for Tomb Raider—is also developing a Lord of the Rings title under the Embracer umbrella.
Back in 2024, Embracer confirmed it was prototyping several new ideas based on the franchise. Meanwhile, executive Lee Guinchard expressed his ambition to spark a full-blown revival of LOTR games. If that vision holds true, we could be looking at multiple major releases in the coming years.
Middle-earth Is Expanding Beyond Games
The Lord of the Rings universe isn’t slowing down anytime soon. On the film side, several new projects are in development, starting with 2027’s The Hunt for Gollum.
The movie will see Andy Serkis return as Gollum—while also stepping into the director’s chair. Familiar faces are also set to return, including Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo.
New additions to the cast include Kate Winslet as Marigol and Jamie Dornan as Aragorn. Meanwhile, Leo Woodall will portray Halvard, and Lee Pace reprises his role as Thranduil.
Even More Stories on the Way
And that’s not all—Stephen Colbert, a well-known Tolkien superfan, is reportedly writing another Lord of the Rings film. This project will adapt the “Fogs on the Barrow-downs” chapter from The Fellowship of the Ring, introducing the fan-favorite character Tom Bombadil—who was notably absent from the original film trilogy.
