Subnautica 2 Launches Day One on Game Pass
Subnautica 2 is officially making waves with a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass, as confirmed by developer Unknown Worlds. The highly anticipated sequel is set to launch on May 14 for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the Rog Xbox Ally, available to both Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
Early Access Release Across Platforms
Just like its Steam counterpart, Subnautica 2 will debut in early access—referred to as Game Preview on Xbox. This means players will get to explore the underwater world while the game continues to evolve over time.
If you’re planning your first dive, be sure to check the exact launch times for both Xbox and PC so you can jump in the moment servers go live.
Massive Hype and Fan Expectations
The excitement surrounding Subnautica 2 is undeniable—it currently holds the title of most wishlisted game on Steam. The original Subnautica (2018) earned widespread praise, and its follow-up, Below Zero, further cemented the franchise’s popularity among survival and exploration fans.
At this stage, there’s no confirmation of a release on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2, leaving Xbox and PC as the only confirmed platforms.
Performance Focus and Customization
In a blog post, senior QA analyst Rob Hamiter highlighted that optimizing performance for the Rog Xbox Ally was a key focus after the game’s announcement.
At launch, the game will feature a default graphics preset, but players will have the freedom to adjust settings to match their preferred performance and visual quality.
Long-Term Development Plans
Unknown Worlds emphasized that the early access version represents “the result of years of hard work.” The studio also confirmed plans to continue refining and expanding the game:
“developing the game over the next few years….”
This signals a long-term commitment to improving gameplay, adding features, and responding to community feedback.
Pricing and Game Pass Details
While Subnautica 2 will be included in Game Pass, players can also purchase it outright for $30.
Recently, Game Pass pricing became more accessible:
- Game Pass Ultimate: $23/month (down from $30)
- PC Game Pass: $14/month (down from $16.50)
However, the game will not be available on the Game Pass Essential or Premium tiers.
Behind the Scenes: Development Drama
The game is being co-published by Krafton, which also owns Unknown Worlds. Development hasn’t been without controversy.
In 2025, Krafton removed the founders of Unknown Worlds and pushed the game’s release to 2026. The former leadership claimed this move was made—reportedly after consulting ChatGPT—to avoid a $250 million payout that would have been required if the game launched in 2025.
Earlier this year, a judge ruled that CEO Ted Gill must be reinstated, adding another twist to the ongoing situation.
