Helldivers 2 Is Getting a Warhammer 40K Warbond
Helldivers 2 is officially heading into the grim darkness of the far future with its next Legendary Warbond, bringing elements from Warhammer 40,000 into the explosive co-op shooter. For fans of both franchises, it’s a crossover that feels almost inevitable.
The reveal came during the latest Warhammer Skulls presentation, which also featured updates on upcoming titles like Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 and Warhammer: Vermintide – Deathmaster. During the showcase, Helldivers 2 director Mikael Eriksson officially confirmed the collaboration.
“At Arrowhead, we believe these two worlds fit perfectly together, and as a studio of diehard Warhammer fans, we are beyond thrilled to see this Legendary Warbond come to life,” Eriksson said.
Arrowhead hasn’t announced an exact release date yet, but players can expect the Warbond to arrive sometime later this year.
The Third Major Crossover for Helldivers 2
This upcoming Warhammer 40K collaboration will mark the third major IP crossover for Helldivers 2. Previous crossover content included nods to franchises like Killzone and Halo 3: ODST.
The partnership makes perfect sense thematically. Both universes revolve around humanity fighting endless wars against overwhelming alien threats across brutal galaxies. The soldiers of Super Earth and the Imperium share a very similar “throw troops at the problem” philosophy.
Still, fans hoping to stomp around as a towering Space Marine may want to lower expectations.
Why Space Marines Probably Won’t Appear
Based on earlier comments from former Arrowhead CEO and current creative director Johan Pilestedt, it seems far more likely that the crossover will focus on Warhammer 40K’s Astra Militarum rather than the iconic Adeptus Astartes.
Pilestedt previously discussed crossover possibilities online, explaining that some universes naturally fit Helldivers 2 better than others. He grouped Halo’s ODST troopers and Warhammer 40K’s Astra Militarum together as good thematic matches, while placing characters like Master Chief and the genetically enhanced Space Marines on the opposite side of the line.
He later clarified that crossover content in Helldivers 2 should remain limited, preserve immersion, and feel like a near “1:1 match” between franchises.
That philosophy lines up closely with what makes Helldivers unique. Despite being considered elite soldiers, Helldivers are ultimately expendable infantry. Millions die during the game’s ongoing Second Galactic War, and Super Earth’s government treats those losses as acceptable collateral damage.
That makes the Astra Militarum — ordinary humans sent into impossible battles against horrifying alien enemies — a far more natural fit than the nearly unstoppable Space Marines.
Expect Warhammer Weapons Instead
Even if Space Marines stay off the battlefield, the crossover still opens the door for some iconic Warhammer 40K gear. Fans are already speculating about the possibility of bolters, chainswords, and other brutal Imperial weaponry appearing as part of the new Warbond.
Given Arrowhead’s approach to previous crossover content, themed armor sets, weapons, cosmetics, and possibly voice packs all seem likely candidates.
A Big Update During a Difficult Period for the Game
The Warhammer announcement arrives during a turbulent period for Helldivers 2. The game’s most recent Warbond introduced two new Exosuits alongside major balance adjustments, but the update also sparked frustration throughout the community.
Recent Steam user reviews for Helldivers 2 have slipped into the “Mostly Negative” category, with players criticizing balance issues, progression systems, and communication from the developers.
In response, Arrowhead released a blog post addressing community concerns and outlining plans to improve the game. The studio says it aims to refine the Galactic War’s meta-progression systems while also communicating more consistently with players about future updates and development priorities.
For now, the upcoming Warhammer 40K Warbond could be exactly the kind of high-profile content drop the game needs to reignite excitement among the community.
