Ghost Recon: Wildlands Current-Gen Upgrade Leaks With 4K, 60FPS, and New Story Content

The Ghost Recon series is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special showcase, and it appears one of Ubisoft’s biggest planned surprises may have leaked ahead of schedule. A PlayStation Store listing has seemingly revealed details of a major current-gen upgrade for 2017’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

According to information spotted by users on the Ghost Recon subreddit, the upgrade could significantly modernize Wildlands for current hardware, bringing improved visuals and performance alongside new content.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands Could Get 4K and 60FPS Support

The leaked PlayStation Store information reportedly points to a free current-gen upgrade for Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

On PlayStation 5, the update is said to include 4K resolution at 60fps, along with 3D audio support and substantially faster loading times thanks to the console’s SSD. Ubisoft also appears to be taking advantage of the DualSense controller, with additional haptic feedback features reportedly included.

Beyond the technical improvements, the upgrade could introduce a brand-new story pack called “Last Rites.” Several quality-of-life improvements are also reportedly planned.

While the leak specifically concerns the PlayStation version, similar graphical improvements, gameplay enhancements, and additional content could potentially arrive on Xbox Series X|S and PC as well. Ghost Recon: Wildlands originally launched across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2017.

Rumors of a Wildlands Upgrade Have Been Building

This isn’t the first indication that Ubisoft may be preparing to revisit Wildlands.

Reports of a potential current-gen upgrade began circulating in July. At the time, Ubisoft said it planned to reveal more about the future of the franchise as part of Ghost Recon’s 25th-anniversary celebrations.

The franchise is currently managed under Creative House 2, one of several groups established as part of Ubisoft’s restructuring earlier this year.

Creative House 2 focuses primarily on Ubisoft’s competitive and cooperative shooter franchises, including The Division, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon.

Wildlands Remains One of Ghost Recon’s Biggest Successes

Ghost Recon: Wildlands proved to be a major success for Ubisoft following its 2017 launch, but its sequel struggled to achieve the same reception.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint received a considerably more lukewarm response from both players and critics. Ubisoft’s controversial decision to introduce NFTs to the game also failed to generate the kind of renewed interest the publisher might have hoped for.

Despite its difficult launch and mixed reception, Breakpoint received a substantial amount of post-launch support and additional content. That support eventually came to an end in 2022, when Ubisoft announced that it was moving on from the game.

Wildlands, meanwhile, has maintained a following years after release, making a current-gen overhaul a potentially welcome way to bring players back.

A New Ghost Recon Game Is Also in Development

The Wildlands upgrade might not be the only Ghost Recon project Ubisoft has in the works.

In July, the publisher quietly confirmed that development is underway on an entirely new Ghost Recon title.

Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet described the upcoming project as a “first-person-shooter-type” game.

If the description accurately represents the final game, it would mark a significant change for the franchise. Ghost Recon has largely relied on a third-person perspective since Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter arrived in 2006.

With Ghost Recon celebrating its 25th anniversary and both a Wildlands upgrade and an entirely new installment apparently on the horizon, Ubisoft could be preparing for a major revival of its long-running tactical shooter franchise.
