Sony Closes Bluepoint Games, the Masterminds Behind Demon’s Souls and Iconic PlayStation Remakes
In a move that has stunned longtime PlayStation fans, Sony has reportedly shut down Bluepoint Games, the Texas-based studio celebrated for some of the most technically impressive remakes in gaming history.
The news was first reported by journalist Jason Schreier on Bluesky, marking the end of a studio legacy that spanned nearly two decades.
Around 70 Jobs Cut Following Business Review
According to Bloomberg, a PlayStation spokesperson confirmed that approximately 70 employees were laid off. The studio’s closure reportedly took place in March after what Sony described as “a recent business review.”
“Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community,” the spokesperson told Bloomberg. “We thank them for their passion, creativity, and craftsmanship.”
While Sony’s statement praised the studio’s contributions, the decision underscores the ongoing restructuring happening across the gaming industry.
From Austin Startup to PlayStation Powerhouse
Founded in 2006 in Austin, Texas, Bluepoint Games built its reputation by reviving beloved PlayStation classics with stunning technical precision. Over the years, the studio handled remasters and remakes of major franchises including:
- God of War
- Uncharted
- Gravity Rush
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Metal Gear Solid
- Ico
However, the studio truly stepped into the spotlight with the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls. The visually breathtaking reimagining of FromSoftware’s dark fantasy RPG became a standout title for the PlayStation 5’s launch window and demonstrated Bluepoint’s ability to modernize beloved classics without losing their soul.
Sony officially acquired Bluepoint Games in September 2021, solidifying its place within the PlayStation Studios family.
A Canceled Live-Service God of War Project
More recently, Bluepoint was reportedly working on a live-service God of War title. However, PlayStation canceled the project in January 2025 before it could see the light of day.
The cancellation may have signaled deeper strategic shifts within Sony’s live-service ambitions – shifts that ultimately led to the studio’s closure.
The End of an Era for Premium Remakes?
Bluepoint Games earned a reputation for treating classic titles with remarkable care and technical excellence. From Shadow of the Colossus to Demon’s Souls, their work consistently demonstrated how remakes could elevate beloved games for modern audiences.
With the studio now shuttered, many fans are left wondering what this means for the future of high-quality PlayStation remakes.
One thing is certain: Bluepoint’s legacy — defined by craftsmanship, passion, and technical mastery – will remain a benchmark for remake studios across the industry.
