GTA 6 PC Delay Explained: Why Rockstar Is Launching on Consoles First

Grand Theft Auto VI is officially set to launch this November for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but PC players won’t be joining the party on day one. While many fans expected Rockstar to finally break tradition and release the game simultaneously across all major platforms, Take-Two Interactive has now clarified why that isn’t happening—and according to the company, it has nothing to do with PlayStation exclusivity deals.
Speaking with Bloomberg, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that Rockstar has historically focused on console audiences first when launching major titles like GTA.
“I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core [audience].”
He continued by emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the largest and most engaged player base first.
“Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”
No, Sony Isn’t Blocking a PC Release
Rumors have circulated for months suggesting that Sony’s marketing partnership with Rockstar may have influenced the lack of a PC launch version. However, Zelnick directly rejected that idea.
“No,” Zelnick said. “I mean, historically Rockstar’s gone to console first.”
Rockstar has followed this exact strategy before with titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, both of which arrived on PC well after their console debuts.
PC Gaming Has Become Too Big to Ignore
Although GTA 6 won’t arrive on PC immediately, Take-Two clearly recognizes how valuable the platform has become.
Zelnick revealed that when he joined Take-Two back in 2007, PC sales represented only around 5% of total sales for the NBA 2K franchise. Today, that number has skyrocketed.
“Now with regard to a big title, PC can be 45, 50% of the sales,” he said.
That dramatic shift is one reason many fans believed GTA 6 might finally break Rockstar’s traditional release pattern. Earlier in 2025, Zelnick himself described PC as a far more important platform than it used to be, fueling speculation about a day-one PC release.
Still, Rockstar appears committed to its long-standing console-first strategy.
A Delayed PC Launch Could Boost Sales Even More
There may also be a business advantage to staggering the release schedule.
Launching first on consoles and later on PC could create a second major sales wave for GTA 6. Some players may even purchase the game twice—once on console and again later on PC for enhanced visuals, mods, or performance upgrades.
“We’ll see how it works out,” Zelnick said.
Former Rockstar developer Mike York previously shared a similar perspective in 2023. York, who worked on both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, suggested Rockstar simply focuses on the platforms that generate the biggest immediate returns.
Rockstar wants to “prioritize what sells.”
Rockstar Knows the Pressure Is Massive
Zelnick also admitted that launching GTA 6 comes with enormous pressure for both Rockstar and Take-Two.
It is “terrifying” because “the expectations are so high.”
And those expectations are absolutely massive. Industry analysts predict GTA 6 could sell around 40 million copies and generate more than $3 billion in revenue during its first year alone.
That’s a staggering target, but the franchise has the track record to support the hype. GTA 5 has already sold over 225 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling games of all time while continuing to generate enormous revenue through GTA Online.
How Much Will GTA 6 Cost?
Rockstar still hasn’t confirmed the official retail price for GTA 6, but discussions around a potential $80 price tag continue to grow.
Bank of America recently suggested Rockstar should price the game at $80, arguing that it could encourage the rest of the industry to adopt higher pricing for AAA releases as well.
For now, Zelnick has only stated that the game will be priced at a “reasonable” level, though exactly what that means remains unclear.
GTA 6 Release Date
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not yet announced a release date for the PC version, though based on the company’s history, it will likely arrive sometime after the console launch window.
