Starfield’s Next Update Isn’t a Full Reboot
Last year, Bethesda told players that Starfield would receive both a second story DLC and a large-scale update. Early footage shown behind closed doors teased several new mechanics, and that preview quickly sparked online speculation that a dramatic rework – often dubbed “Starfield 2.0” – was on the way.
According to Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard, that’s not the case.
Speaking during a recent appearance on Kinda Funny (reported by Insider Gaming), Howard directly addressed the rumors and set expectations for players.
“It is not Starfield 2.0,” said Howard during a recent appearance on Kinda Funny (via Insider Gaming). “I’ve seen some of that, and for expectation setting–I think it’s the kinda thing where if you like Starfield, we think you’re going to love this. It’s updates and things that change the game, not in an isolated way, but you know ‘meta,’ using outer space and things in ways that we haven’t. But if Starfield is something that didn’t connect with you right away, or you bounced off it, or found it boring in places, I don’t think it’s going to change that fundamentally. But if you’re someone who loves Starfield and we think [you’ll love it]. We’re really happy with it.”
In other words, Bethesda isn’t rebuilding the RPG from scratch. Instead, the studio is expanding and refining the existing systems. Fans who already enjoy the exploration and sandbox elements should find plenty to appreciate – but players who struggled to get into the game shouldn’t expect a completely different experience.
The Second Story DLC: “Terran Armada”
Bethesda teased the upcoming expansion last fall with a short preview featuring the phrase “Terran Armada.” While full details remain under wraps, the DLC is expected to add more narrative content and activities designed to keep longtime players engaged.
Reports suggest the DLC may launch alongside a new platform release to maximize interest and give both veterans and newcomers fresh content at the same time.
PlayStation 5 Rumors and Switch 2 Leak
One of the biggest ongoing rumors is a potential PlayStation 5 version of Starfield. Bethesda has not officially confirmed it, but a recent report claims the game could arrive on PS5 in April, possibly in both standard and deluxe editions.
Meanwhile, another leak indicates that a planned Nintendo Switch 2 port has either been delayed or quietly canceled. As of now, Bethesda hasn’t publicly commented on either situation.
Mods Are Already Reinventing the Game
While players wait for official updates, the PC community has taken matters into its own hands. A major fan project — Star Wars: Genesis — transforms Starfield into a full Star Wars-style adventure.
The mod is still in development, but a recent update introduced lightsaber combat along with additional gameplay improvements, showing just how flexible Bethesda’s space RPG can be in the hands of modders.
What This Means for Players
The upcoming update and DLC aim to deepen Starfield rather than reinvent it. Bethesda is clearly focusing on expanding the sandbox and adding new ways to interact with space exploration systems, not replacing the core gameplay loop.
So the takeaway is simple:
- If you already enjoy Starfield, the future content should make the game significantly better.
- If the original experience didn’t click for you, this update probably won’t completely change your mind, and Bethesda is openly acknowledging that.
For fans of the game’s universe, though, the galaxy is about to get a lot busier.
