The gaming calendar for 2026 is shaping up to be one of the busiest in recent memory. With Grand Theft Auto 6 scheduled to arrive in November, publishers and developers have been carefully positioning their releases around Rockstar’s highly anticipated blockbuster. The result? September 2026 has become a battleground packed with major launches.
One game has decided to step aside rather than compete in the crowded month.
Developer One More Level has confirmed that Valor Mortis will no longer launch on September 24. Instead, the first-person action souls-like is now scheduled to release on October 13, giving it a bit more breathing room away from the growing wave of September releases.
In a statement explaining the delay, the studio said:
“September has become absolutely stacked with incredible-looking games.”
The team added:
“We want to give Valor Mortis (and your wallet) some room to breathe.”
Why Valor Mortis Is Moving to October
According to the developer, the possibility of a delay had been under consideration for some time. However, after the game appeared during the Xbox Games Showcase, the team had to publicly announce a release date before it was fully locked in.
The studio explained that showcase schedules often require dates to be finalized weeks in advance, making it difficult to react to later announcements from other publishers.
Speaking to Game File, Lyrical Games publishing head Blake Rochkind explained:
“When we picked September 24th, it looked like a very, very clear date,”
That situation changed quickly after Remedy revealed during the June 2 State of Play event that Control Resonant would also launch on September 24.
Rochkind said:
“We knew were were moving the date [for Valor Mortis],”
Extra Development Time Brings Additional Benefits
While avoiding direct competition was a major factor, the delay also provides the development team with nearly three extra weeks to polish the game before launch.
Players interested in trying the title early can already download and play a free demo on Steam.
What Is Valor Mortis?
Valor Mortis is a first-person action souls-like that places players in the role of William, a former soldier from Napoleon’s army. After rising from the dead, William embarks on a brutal journey filled with monstrous enemies and challenging combat encounters.
Adding to the game’s unique premise, acclaimed French actor Vincent Cassel portrays Napoleon.
The game is currently scheduled to launch on:
- PC
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass on day one.
September 2026 Is Packed With Major Releases
Valor Mortis isn’t the only game drawing attention this fall. September is loaded with highly anticipated launches, making it one of the most competitive months of the year.
Here’s a look at some of the biggest releases currently scheduled for September 2026:
- The Blood of Dawnwalker — September 3
- Marvel’s Wolverine — September 15
- Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave — September 17
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV — September 17
- Control Resonant — September 24
- Silent Hill: Townfall — September 24
- Minecraft Dungeons II — September 29
With so many major titles fighting for players’ attention—and GTA 6 looming just weeks later—it’s no surprise that some studios are choosing to adjust their release plans. For Valor Mortis, a short delay could be the difference between getting lost in the crowd and finding its own spotlight this fall.
