Quantic Dream Shuts Down Its First Live-Service Game
French developer Quantic Dream has officially announced the shutdown of its debut live-service title, Spellcasters Chronicles. At the same time, the studio reassured fans that development on the long-awaited Star Wars Eclipse is still moving forward.
Launched in February as a free-to-play early-access experience, Spellcasters Chronicles combined MOBA-style gameplay with deckbuilding mechanics while aiming to deliver “community-driven” storytelling. Despite those ambitions, the game will permanently shut down on June 19.
Quantic Dream also confirmed that players who spent money on the title will receive refunds.
Star Wars Eclipse Development “Continues as Planned”
Alongside the shutdown announcement, the studio addressed concerns surrounding Star Wars Eclipse, which was originally revealed back in 2021.
According to Quantic Dream, development of the sci-fi project is “not affected by this decision and continues as planned.”
That statement arrives after months of uncertainty surrounding the game’s status. Back in October, Quantic Dream founder David Cage reassured fans by stating:
“Of course, development of Star Wars Eclipse continues, and we are eager to share more with you in the future,”
However, an April report suggested the project may have been progressing slowly. The report also claimed that Quantic Dream’s parent company, NetEase, could reevaluate the game’s future if Spellcasters Chronicles failed to perform.
Studio Points to Harsh Market Conditions
In its latest statement, Quantic Dream blamed the closure on “today’s particularly challenging market environment.” The company also mentioned plans for an “internal reorganization.”
While the studio stopped short of confirming layoffs, it noted that it intends to prioritize “internal reassignments wherever possible.” That wording suggests the company is attempting to minimize job losses during the restructuring process.
Fans Still Waiting for Concrete Proof
Although Quantic Dream continues to insist that Star Wars Eclipse remains in active development, many fans remain skeptical due to the lack of updates since the game’s reveal several years ago.
For now, the studio’s latest statement may help calm concerns temporarily, but players are still waiting to see meaningful gameplay footage or major development updates before fully believing the project is on track.
Meanwhile, Spellcasters Chronicles joins a growing list of live-service games that struggled to survive in today’s increasingly competitive multiplayer market.
