Star Wars Eclipse Faces an Uncertain Future
The highly anticipated Star Wars Eclipse, currently in development by Quantic Dream – the studio behind Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls – is reportedly still in the works, but progress has been slower than expected.
According to a report from Insider Gaming, development hasn’t stalled entirely, but it’s moving at a “very slow” pace. This raises concerns about whether the project can meet its expected timeline, or even survive long-term.
Development Progress Slowing Down
Sources cited in the report claim that while Quantic Dream has completed a “good portion” of Star Wars Eclipse, the remaining work is not advancing as quickly as planned.
There were also internal discussions between Quantic Dream and its parent company NetEase about expanding the development team. However, no additional hiring reportedly took place, which may be contributing to the sluggish progress.
Financial Pressure Could Shape the Game’s Fate
The future of Star Wars Eclipse may depend less on creativity and more on financial performance, specifically tied to another project.
Quantic Dream and NetEase are reportedly relying on the studio’s new free-to-play multiplayer title, Spellcasters Chronicles, to generate revenue that can help fund ongoing development.
Spellcasters Chronicles is a 3v3 online multiplayer game – something quite different from Quantic Dream’s usual narrative-driven titles. It launched in early access in February and follows a free-to-play model with microtransactions, though its financial performance has not been publicly disclosed.
One source summed up the situation clearly:
“At this stage, the long-term outlook is less driven by creative capabilities and more by financial viability,” the site’s source said. “Should Spellcasters fail commercially, NetEase is expected to reevaluate its commitment to the studio and could opt to discontinue further investment.”
A Long Wait Since Announcement
Star Wars Eclipse was first revealed back in 2021, but updates have been scarce ever since. In 2025, Quantic Dream reassured fans that the game is “of course” still in development and promised to share more details when the time is right.
There have also been reports suggesting a potential release window in 2026, though given the current development challenges, that timeline could shift.
About Quantic Dream
Founded in 1997, Quantic Dream has built a reputation for cinematic, story-driven experiences. Its portfolio includes:
- The Nomad Soul
- Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy)
- Heavy Rain
- Beyond: Two Souls
- Detroit: Become Human
- Spellcasters Chronicles
In 2022, NetEase acquired the Paris-based studio, marking its first major expansion into the European game development scene.
What This Means for Star Wars Fans
Star Wars Eclipse remains one of several Star Wars projects currently in development, but its future is far from guaranteed. With slow progress and financial dependencies tied to another game’s success, the project sits in a fragile position.
For now, fans will have to wait (and hope) that both development and funding align to bring this ambitious title to life.
