Avowed Opens Eora’s Gates: Pillars of Eternity Devs Tease Familiar Faces in Obsidian’s Action-RPG

Avowed’s Immersive Eora Experience
Avowed is set to transport longtime Pillars of Eternity fans back into the world of Eora—this time as a fully explorable, first-person action-RPG. According to game director Carrie Patel, the game aims to bring the rich lore and environments of Pillars into a “big immersive space” where players can freely roam and discover familiar locales from a new perspective.

In a recent quickfire interview with MinnMax, Patel explained that the development team wants veteran Pillars players to “see the world they’ve come to know over two games” in a dynamic, explorable setting. When asked if the team has succeeded, Patel confidently answered, “mission accomplished.”

A Third of the Pillars Team on Board
Patel also revealed that roughly one-third of the original Pillars of Eternity developers are now working on Avowed. This dedicated group is helping ensure the new title remains true to the spirit of the Pillars series while evolving into a more action-focused experience.

Beyond the development crossover, Patel confirmed that recognizable characters from Pillars of Eternity will make appearances in Avowed. And when pressed on whether there would be more than three returning faces, she emphatically indicated yes, suggesting fans have much to look forward to.

Release Date and Accessibility
Avowed arrives on February 18 for Xbox Series X, PC, and will be included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. This marks the first official return to Eora since 2018’s Pillars of Eternity II. Even if you haven’t played the previous Pillars games, Obsidian has crafted Avowed as a newcomer-friendly entry point to the plague-ridden Living Lands. While longtime fans will appreciate the nods to previous games, you won’t need prior knowledge to dive right into the story.
