Two of EA’s biggest shooter studios are officially joining forces, and reports suggest their mysterious project could be the long-awaited Star Wars Battlefront 3.
Electronic Arts is undergoing a major restructuring, bringing significant changes to some of its most recognizable studios and franchises. Alongside widespread layoffs and the closure of BioWare, the publisher has revealed that Respawn Entertainment, the team behind Apex Legends, and Battlefield developer DICE are collaborating on a new project.
While EA has yet to reveal exactly what the two studios are creating, a new report suggests that Star Wars Battlefront 3 could finally be happening.
Respawn and DICE Could Be Bringing Battlefront Back
According to Variety, which cites “multiple sources,” the mysterious collaboration between Respawn and DICE is reportedly the third installment in the Star Wars Battlefront series.
EA has not officially confirmed the game’s existence. However, the publisher’s restructuring announcement provides some interesting clues about its future plans.
The company explained that the upcoming collaboration would support its ambition to build a “shooter portfolio that unlocks growth.”
EA also highlighted how lessons learned from Battlefield 6’s launch and ongoing live-service support will help shape its shooter strategy. Meanwhile, Apex Legends is expected to receive additional “gameplay modes” and “other new experiences” as part of the publisher’s plans to expand the franchise.
With both studios bringing years of experience developing major multiplayer shooters, a new Battlefront game would certainly make sense.
Recent Rumors Add Fuel to the Battlefront 3 Speculation
The latest report arrives shortly after rumors emerged that Lucasfilm Games was searching for a development partner to revive the Battlefront franchise.
According to those earlier claims, DICE and Bungie, the Sony-owned studio known for Destiny, were among the developers being considered for the project.
Although neither rumor confirms that Battlefront 3 is officially moving forward, the newly announced partnership between Respawn and DICE adds another intriguing piece to the puzzle.
For fans who have spent years hoping for a sequel, the possibility of these two experienced shooter developers working together on a new Star Wars title is particularly exciting.
Battlefront 2’s Popularity Shows the Demand Is Still There
DICE previously developed two Star Wars Battlefront titles for EA, launching the first in 2015 and its sequel in 2017.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 initially faced considerable backlash over its controversial loot box and progression systems. Despite its troubled launch, the game eventually became a major success and built a dedicated player community.
Interest in the franchise remained strong long after its release.
In 2025, Battlefront 2 experienced an unexpected resurgence, with its Steam player count climbing to impressive new heights and breaking previous records.
The renewed popularity prompted fans to speculate about the possibility of a third installment, although reports at the time suggested that a sequel was far from guaranteed.
Now, with EA bringing together two major development teams, those hopes may have a stronger foundation than before.
Star Wars Gaming Continues to Expand
The potential return of Battlefront comes during an exciting period for Star Wars video games.
The franchise has already seen two notable additions in 2026, with the strategy-focused Star Wars Zero Company, co-developed by Respawn, and the racing game Star Wars: Galactic Racer both receiving positive critical attention.
These releases demonstrate Lucasfilm Games’ continued interest in exploring different genres and gameplay experiences beyond traditional action adventures.
A new Battlefront would complement that growing lineup by bringing large-scale multiplayer warfare back into the spotlight.
For now, Star Wars Battlefront 3 remains unconfirmed, and EA has not announced a release window or shared any gameplay details.
Still, the prospect of Respawn and DICE combining their expertise on a new Star Wars shooter is enough to give longtime Battlefront fans plenty of reasons to pay attention.
After nearly a decade since the release of Battlefront 2, the galaxy far, far away might finally be preparing for another massive multiplayer showdown.
