Diablo 4 Season 14 is beginning to reveal some intriguing clues about where Blizzard may take the ARPG next. Players who reach the end of the seasonal storyline are greeted with several major hints about a returning threat—but anyone expecting Diablo himself to immediately reclaim the spotlight may be in for a surprise.

Death’s Awakening Brings Players Back to the Pandemonium Fortress

Season 14, appropriately titled Death’s Awakening, centers on a death cult determined to put an end to Sanctuary’s suffering following Mephisto’s defeat.

As players progress through the storyline, their journey eventually takes them to a location longtime Diablo fans will instantly recognize: the Pandemonium Fortress.

The iconic stronghold previously appeared in Diablo 2 and later returned in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. This time, players encounter the corrupted angel Seraziel within its halls.

After Seraziel is defeated, the angel leaves behind a particularly ominous warning:

“He is coming.”

That short message could have enormous implications for Diablo 4’s future.

Malthael Looks Increasingly Likely to Return

The mysterious “he” appears to be Malthael, the former Archangel of Wisdom who became the Angel of Death and served as the main antagonist of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls.

Seraziel serves Malthael, making the connection difficult to ignore.

Considering Season 14’s heavy focus on death, Malthael was already an obvious character for Blizzard to reference. However, bringing players back to the Pandemonium Fortress—the location associated with Malthael’s final confrontation—while simultaneously introducing one of his servants makes the potential setup far more explicit.

It increasingly looks like Blizzard isn’t simply using Malthael as background lore. The studio may be preparing the Angel of Death for a genuine return.

A Mysterious Stranger Adds Another Piece to the Puzzle

Malthael isn’t the only mystery introduced during the conclusion of the Season 14 storyline.

As highlighted by Diablo content creator LoatheBurger, players encounter a strange old man following Seraziel’s defeat. The stranger warns that there is nothing anyone can do against Death itself.

When the player asks for his identity, he responds:

“I am no one, brave child. And for all your might, neither are you.”

The encounter becomes even more suspicious afterward.

When speaking with questgiver Dannica, players can choose a dialogue option stating, “There was something familiar about that old man.” The player character then specifically notes that the stranger’s voice sounded familiar.

That detail strongly suggests this isn’t simply a random new NPC.

So, Who Is the Mysterious Old Man?

Blizzard appears to be deliberately leaving the stranger’s identity unresolved for now.

The familiar voice could indicate someone Diablo 4 players have already met—or potentially a returning character from the wider franchise.

Could he be a long-lost member of the Horadrim? Could Lorath somehow have returned from the dead? Is Blizzard preparing the seemingly impossible comeback of Deckard Cain?

For now, there isn’t enough evidence to definitively identify him. But emphasizing the familiarity of his voice makes it clear that Blizzard wants players asking exactly these questions.

Diablo 4’s Seasonal Stories May Be Becoming Much More Important

Perhaps the most interesting part of these developments is where Blizzard has chosen to introduce them.

Historically, Diablo 4’s seasonal narratives have largely functioned as standalone adventures. They expanded Sanctuary with new characters, enemies, and storylines, but generally remained separate from the game’s central narrative.

Season 14 appears to be changing that formula.

If Death’s Awakening really is establishing Malthael as a future major antagonist—or laying the groundwork for another expansion—then Diablo 4 seasons could become much more important to the game’s overarching story.

Instead of simply offering temporary side stories, future seasons may increasingly bridge the gaps between major expansions and foreshadow what comes next.

Malthael Could Take the Spotlight Before Diablo or Baal

Following the conclusion of the Lord of Hatred expansion, many fans naturally expected Blizzard to begin preparing the return of another Prime Evil.

But Season 14 appears to be pointing in a different direction.

Between Seraziel, the return of the Pandemonium Fortress, the season’s overwhelming focus on death, and the cryptic appearance of a familiar stranger, Malthael currently looks like the strongest candidate to become Diablo 4’s next major threat.

Whether Blizzard is setting him up for another expansion, a future seasonal storyline, or something even bigger remains unknown.

One thing is becoming increasingly clear, though: Death may not be finished with Sanctuary just yet.
