Cyberpunk 2077 continues to be the financial powerhouse keeping CD Projekt Red moving full steam ahead. The studio has confirmed that the 2020 sci-fi RPG has officially become its primary source of revenue, reaching 35 million copies sold – hitting that milestone even faster than The Witcher 3 did.
CD Projekt Red shared the news in its latest earnings report. “That’s a better result than The Witcher 3 was able to achieve in the same post-release time frame,” CFO Piotr Nielubowicz explained. He added that Cyberpunk 2077 has now become the company’s “main source of income” as production ramps up on the next installment, Cyberpunk 2, with development teams collaborating across Warsaw and Boston.
While nearly half the studio is still committed to bringing The Witcher 4 to life, CDPR aims to have more than 300 developers working on the Cyberpunk sequel by the end of 2027. This staffing shift suggests that year could mark a major turning point as the studio transitions into full production, assuming all goes smoothly.
Even though Cyberpunk 2077 still trails The Witcher 3’s lifetime tally of 60 million sales, its rapid comeback is remarkable for a game that stumbled out of the gate in spectacular fashion. The PC version earned praise, but the disastrous last-gen console launch sparked viral bug compilations, backlash from players, and even panicked investors.
It’s rare to see a game once removed from the PlayStation Store evolve into a studio’s dominant financial pillar. The revival is largely credited to the steady stream of massive patches and the critically acclaimed Phantom Liberty expansion released in 2023.
The momentum didn’t stop there. A polished Switch 2 port arrived this June, giving millions of players their first taste of Night City on Nintendo’s new hardware. Whether newcomers are diving into V’s chaotic journey for the first time or returning players are chasing that elusive “good ending,” cross-save support makes it all the easier. And honestly, thank goodness for that.
