The fan-made recreation of TES: Oblivion in the engine of Skyrim is gotta be the most ambitious mods I’ve seen ever. It means that every weapon, quest, NPC, armor, and location will be available and playable in the Creation Engine. Being in the works for more than 10 years now, the developers said It will be released in 2025 at the latest.
Why is Skyblivion? – Drax from The Guardians of the Galaxy could ask. The project started in 2012 with only one person, now the team consists of more than 50 developers. It went viral in 2016, when the head of PR, Rebelzize posted the Return To Cyrodiil Teaser Trailer on youtube. The video now has more than 1 million views and kickstarted the quest of Skyblivion. The core idea was to remake Oblivion in Skyrim’s engine to give fans a free remake of their beloved 4th installation of The Elder Scrolls series. The project is purely volunteer-based, so the 10-year duration of the development is kind of amazing, given that AAA games take the same time to make by a fully funded studio. The team does not just remodel game objects, they overhaul the landscapes, cities, interiors, and much more. They implement all the quests and even add new ones, based upon the lore of The Elder Scrolls universe.
Okay, remade objects, remade quests, and whole Cyrodiil. From the dev diaries, it’s obvious that Skyblivion will look astonishing, but what about game mechanics? The combat system and lockpicking will probably stay the same as in Skyrim, but more important aspects such as spell crafting, and custom classes will be implemented. Underwater combat was also confirmed in the first dev-diary. Skyblivion aims to make the game feel more alive. For example, the team remakes the interiors in such a way that they fit their purpose in the setting: Shops will be showing the goods on sale, houses will mirror the owner’s economic status, etc. Also, by giving NPC’s schedules, and creating timed events the world will feel much richer and full of life.
When I see a phenomenon like Skyblivion, I wonder how far gaming technology come from the first tennis game in 1958. Not just in the technological side of things, but the social impacts on our world. People getting together and creating value, in this case making gaming history. If you want to be the part of this amazing feat, you can apply to volunteering, or just follow the project on socal medias.
