Today SMITE released the latest playable Guardian: Maui, the premier Demigod of Polynesian mythology. He is the first Polynesian deity to join the SMITE roster since Pele in 2018.
Maui cinematic trailer
Maui is a benevolent trickster, willing to challenge the Gods themselves if it means helping his people. He wrestled the secret of fire away from the ‘Alae ‘Ula birds and brought it to humanity. Maui ensnared the sun to lengthen the days so people could complete their tasks before dark. He even grabbed hold of the sky and hurled it higher to make room for the mountains and trees to flourish.
Maui is represented in SMITE wearing traditional Hawaiian garments, including a special type of bark cloth called “Kapa”. He is adorned with feathers and bones, and his skin is tattooed. The SMITE team worked closely with Hawaiian advisors and native Hawaiian employees at Hi-Rez in order to ensure Maui’s appearance was truly reflective of his cultural depictions and heritage.
On SMITE’s battleground, Maui is the king of displacements, with three different ways to grab enemies. His allies can also choose to fly towards him via his ‘Mystical Ulua’ ability, a legendary fish. Wiedling his magical fish hook made of ornamented bone, Manaiakalani, Maui can latch on to the Sun to swing back and forth like a pendulum; landing on different areas depending on when he jumps. With his ultimate ‘Landfall’ he hooks a gigantic island and heaves it to the surface of the battleground, knocking up enemies and impeding enemy movements.
This expert fisherman will most likely be played as a Support character aiding a Carry on the Duo Lane, but his unique long-range basic attacks may be alluring for bruiser players too. Like every God of SMITE, Maui can be unlocked for free just by playing.
This major Update also brings the horrific Reaping event, where opening Halloween chests and purchasing new skins reward players with pumpkins. Those pumpkins can then unlock for free two high-quality Unlimited collection skins: Dark Magic Aphrodite and Toony Terror Scylla.
On Halloween weekend, Oct 29-30, SMITE will feature a collaboration with the metal band Hath. In this one-of-a-kind collab, players will be able to queue up for SMITE NIGHT and use any Horror, Metal, or Halloween skins in the mode- completely free!
Last but certainly not least, RWBY returns to SMITE; this time with the iconic villain Cinder Fall appearing as a skin for Morgan Le Fay. In-game, Cinder Fall will be voiced by Jessica Nigri, the original voice actor for the character in the animated series.
“It’s unfortunate you were promised a power that was never truly yours. But take comfort in knowing that I will use it in ways you would never had imagined.”
Cinder Fall, RWBY
Players can unlock Cinder Fall in the RWBY chest today and show the gods what true power looks like…
