World of Warcraft: Forever is shaking up one of the most important decisions players make when creating a character. With the beta scheduled to conclude on October 21, Blizzard has introduced sweeping changes to racial abilities that could dramatically influence which races players choose when the game launches on November 4.
Unlike modern World of Warcraft, where racial bonuses generally have a relatively small impact on gameplay, racial abilities in WoW Classic and Forever can significantly affect a character’s performance. Certain races naturally complement specific classes, while others have traditionally enjoyed advantages when using particular weapons.
However, Blizzard’s latest beta update is challenging those long-established advantages. By removing weapon-specific bonuses, strengthening underperforming abilities, and adjusting some particularly powerful racials, the developer is giving players more flexibility when choosing their characters.
Weapon Restrictions Are Gone for Humans, Orcs, and Dwarves
One of the biggest changes involves the removal of weapon-specific racial bonuses for humans, dwarves, and orcs.
In WoW Classic, these races benefited from increased weapon proficiency with particular equipment. Orcs excelled with axes, humans received bonuses when wielding swords and maces, and dwarves had an advantage with guns.
These bonuses improved weapon skill, increasing hit chances and overall damage output. As a result, players looking to maximize their effectiveness often felt pressured to select certain race and weapon combinations.
During earlier stages of the Forever beta, Blizzard replaced those weapon skill bonuses with critical-strike improvements while maintaining their weapon-specific requirements.
Now, those restrictions have been removed entirely.
Under the latest changes:
- Orcs receive a permanent 1% increase to critical-strike chance.
- Humans gain a permanent 2% increase to critical-strike chance.
- Dwarves benefit from 2% increased critical damage and healing.
These bonuses apply regardless of the weapons players equip, opening the door to considerably more freedom when building characters.
It’s a significant departure from WoW Classic’s traditional racial system, but one that could encourage players to experiment with different equipment without sacrificing valuable racial advantages.
Tauren Receive Major Improvements to Plainsrunning
Tauren players also have plenty to celebrate, particularly those who were concerned about the long-term usefulness of their new Plainsrunning racial ability.
Previously, Plainsrunning provided a stacking movement speed bonus while traveling on foot. Although useful during the early leveling experience, its effectiveness became questionable once players unlocked mounts.
Blizzard has addressed that weakness by introducing an additional 3% mounted movement speed bonus that stacks with other mount-related buffs.
This adjustment makes Plainsrunning relevant even after level 40, giving tauren players a lasting mobility advantage.
The improvements don’t stop there. Blizzard has also reduced the cooldowns of two other tauren abilities:
- Cultivation: The racial herb-gathering ability can now be used more frequently.
- War Stomp: The powerful area-of-effect stun has received a shorter cooldown.
Together, these adjustments make tauren a more appealing option for players interested in mobility, gathering professions, and crowd control.
Dwarves Can Now Discover Extra Loot
Dwarves have received another noteworthy improvement through their Find Treasure racial ability.
Previously, Find Treasure allowed dwarves to detect nearby treasure chests. While convenient for exploration, the ability offered limited practical value compared to the more combat-focused bonuses available to other races.
Blizzard has now expanded its functionality, giving dwarves a chance to discover additional items when opening treasure chests.
Considering how valuable gold and resources are in WoW’s Classic-style economy, this change could make the ability considerably more rewarding.
Combined with their newly unrestricted critical damage and healing bonus, dwarves may become a more competitive choice for players who previously favored humans for their stronger racial advantages.
Skyborne Get Stronger Haste Bonuses and More Flexibility
Skyborne, the newest playable race introduced in WoW: Forever, are also receiving several meaningful improvements.
Their racial Haste bonus has been increased from 1% to 3%, providing a substantial boost to an already useful combat statistic.
Blizzard has also improved the usability of two Skyborne abilities, Skysight and Read Leyline, by allowing players to cast them while moving.
Additionally, more leylines have been placed throughout Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms.
Since Skyborne rely on these magical locations to refresh certain racial buffs, the expanded distribution should make maintaining those bonuses much more convenient during exploration and leveling.
These changes could make Skyborne an increasingly attractive option for players seeking a combination of combat efficiency and unique utility.
Undead, Gnomes, Trolls, and Night Elves Also Receive Updates
Several other playable races have received adjustments, although some are less dramatic than the changes affecting humans, orcs, and tauren.
For undead characters, Blizzard has refined the Forever-exclusive Touch of the Grave passive. The ability now features a more consistent activation chance and cooldown, potentially making its effects more predictable during combat.
Gnomes have seen their Eureka racial reworked into an eight-second buff that no longer uses charges.
Trolls have received a straightforward improvement to their Regeneration passive, increasing their natural health regeneration.
Meanwhile, night elves benefit from a useful quality-of-life adjustment to Quickness. Their racial movement speed bonus can now stack with other movement speed effects, making it more versatile across different situations.
Although these changes may appear relatively small individually, they contribute to Blizzard’s broader effort to make racial abilities more consistent and useful throughout the game.
Orcs Face Significant Nerfs to Blood Fury and Shatter Curse
Not every race is coming out ahead in the latest update.
Orcs, in particular, have received some substantial nerfs that could affect their popularity among players focused on maximizing combat performance.
Blood Fury, the racial ability that temporarily increases attack and spell power, now has a cooldown that is one minute longer than before.
That means orc players will have fewer opportunities to activate the ability during extended encounters.
The changes to Shatter Curse are even more significant.
Previously, the passive provided full immunity against certain effects and offered an impressive 15% reduction in magic damage.
Under the revised system, Shatter Curse now dispels Curses and Banes rather than providing complete immunity. Its magic damage reduction has also been reduced from 15% to just 5%.
These adjustments represent a considerable reduction in the racial’s defensive strength.
Although orcs still retain their new universal critical-strike bonus, the combined nerfs to Blood Fury and Shatter Curse could make other races more competitive depending on class, role, and preferred playstyle.
WoW: Forever’s Racial Overhaul Could Transform the Meta
Blizzard’s latest adjustments represent one of the most extensive racial ability overhauls in World of Warcraft’s history.
By removing weapon restrictions, improving weaker racial abilities, and reducing the power of certain dominant options, the developer appears to be moving toward a system that rewards personal preference without making racial selection feel irrelevant.
Players who previously chose their race primarily for a specific weapon advantage may now have considerably more freedom to experiment with different combinations.
At the same time, improved utility abilities and newly balanced combat bonuses could reshape which races are considered optimal for particular classes.
With the WoW: Forever beta ending October 21 and the game scheduled to launch on November 4, players won’t have to wait long to discover how these changes affect the overall meta.
One thing is clear: choosing the best race in WoW: Forever could be a very different decision from what longtime Classic players are used to.
