Unknown Worlds is shifting its focus from rapid hotfixes to larger content updates as it outlines the next stage of Subnautica 2’s early-access journey.
Despite the controversy surrounding the game prior to launch, Subnautica 2 has made an impressive start in early access. While the development team continues refining the experience, players have now received their first detailed look at what’s coming in the next major update.
A Terrifying New Region Is on the Way
In a recently released developer video, Subnautica 2 Design Lead Anthony Gallegos shared new details about the game’s upcoming content drop. The headline addition is a brand-new region that serves as the home of the mysterious Collector Leviathan.
According to Gallegos, the update will introduce a new chassis that restores one of the community’s most-requested gameplay experiences. Players can also expect new creatures to discover and additional resources to collect while exploring the dangerous new area.
Gallegos hinted at the update’s horror elements, saying:
“I really think it’s going to be the scariest the game has been yet, and I can’t wait for you to try it.”
For fans who enjoy the tense, deep-sea terror that helped define the original Subnautica, that statement is likely to generate plenty of excitement.
Smaller Updates Arriving Before the Major Content Drop
Alongside the larger expansion, Unknown Worlds is preparing several quality-of-life improvements and smaller updates.
One of the most notable additions is proximity voice chat, which the team hopes to introduce “as soon as possible.” The developers are also making Biomod customization more accessible earlier in the game, giving players additional options sooner in their progression.
Another planned improvement will allow players to unlock more passive slots, expanding build flexibility and customization opportunities.
Gameplay Tweaks and Requested Features
The development team is also addressing gameplay feedback from the community.
Gallegos explained that adjustments are being made to Blight parasites, making their encounters easier to recognize by modifying their aggression levels. These changes should help players better identify and react to potential threats during exploration.
In addition, Unknown Worlds is investigating a feature that would allow players to replay voice logs directly from their PDA, a frequently requested convenience feature.
Subnautica 2 Reaches 4 Million Copies Sold
Subnautica 2’s launch has already delivered impressive results. According to Gallegos, the game has sold more than 4 million copies across PC and Xbox Series X|S since release.
That figure does not include players accessing the game through Game Pass, meaning the total player count is likely significantly higher.
At the moment, Subnautica 2 remains unavailable on PlayStation 5, and Unknown Worlds has not announced whether the game will eventually support cross-platform play.
Early Access Expected to Continue for Years
Players planning a long-term adventure should be prepared for an extended development roadmap. Unknown Worlds currently expects Subnautica 2 to remain in early access for approximately three years, giving the team ample time to expand the world, introduce new features, and respond to community feedback.
With a frightening new region, additional customization options, and several highly requested features on the horizon, the next phase of Subnautica 2’s development is shaping up to be one of its most exciting yet.
