Metro 2039 Brings a Fresh Face to the Underground
It’s been over seven years since the release of Metro Exodus, but developer 4A Games is finally back with a brand-new mainline installment: Metro 2039. Created once again in collaboration with series creator Dmitry Glukhovsky, this upcoming entry is shaping up to be the darkest chapter yet – and that’s saying something for this franchise. Fans won’t have to wait too long either, as the game is set to launch this winter.
A Return to the Ruins of Moscow
Like previous entries in the series, Metro 2039 takes players deep beneath the devastated city of Moscow. Following a catastrophic nuclear event, the surface world has become uninhabitable, forcing survivors into the claustrophobic tunnels of the metro system.
Life underground is bleak, and the metro itself has evolved into a haunting graveyard where survival is a daily struggle. The tone is captured perfectly in the game’s trailer:
“It appears that the devastation we brought upon ourselves was complete: Heaven, hell, and purgatory were atomized as well,” we hear in a trailer. “So, when a soul leaves the body, it has nowhere to go, and must remain here, in the metro.”
Meet “The Stranger” – A New Kind of Protagonist
One of the biggest shifts in Metro 2039 is the introduction of a completely new playable character: The Stranger. Unlike previous mainline titles, this marks the first time the series moves away from longtime protagonist Artyom.
The Stranger is fully voiced and appears to share a mysterious link with the Dark Ones – the eerie, shadow-like beings first introduced in Metro 2033. This connection hints at deeper psychological elements and possibly dangerous consequences, echoing themes longtime fans will recognize.
A Stronger Focus on Psychological Horror
Metro 2039 is doubling down on psychological horror, pushing the series into even more unsettling territory. With enhancements to the studio’s proprietary 4A Engine—particularly in lighting and atmosphere – the game aims to deliver its most terrifying experience yet.
Expect more tension, more mind-bending encounters, and a heavier emphasis on the mental toll of survival in a broken world.
A Story Shaped by Real-World Events
Development hasn’t been without challenges. 4A Games, which has roots in Ukraine, revealed that the ongoing conflict caused by Russia’s invasion forced the team to rethink and rewrite significant parts of the narrative.
The result is described as a more “handcrafted” story, built closely with Dmitry Glukhovsky—who himself is currently living in exile due to his outspoken anti-war stance. This real-world influence is expected to bring added depth and emotional weight to the game’s storyline.
