Ghost of Yotei Sales Outpace Ghost of Tsushima, Sony Confirms
Sony has officially confirmed that Ghost of Yotei, the open-world samurai sequel from Sucker Punch Productions, has outperformed Ghost of Tsushima during the same post-launch timeframe — a major milestone for the PlayStation exclusive.
During its latest earnings call, Sony stated that the sequel has “exceeded the sales of the previous title in the same period of time,” highlighting the game’s strong commercial momentum and its meaningful impact on the company’s recent financial performance.
No New Total Yet, But the Trend Is Clear
While Sony did not disclose an updated total sales figure for Ghost of Yotei, the confirmation came during an earnings call transcribed by VGC. The comparison becomes especially telling when stacked against the original game’s launch performance.
Ghost of Tsushima sold more than 2.4 million copies within its first three days on PlayStation 4. Roughly four months after its July 2020 launch, the game crossed 5 million units sold, cementing itself as one of PlayStation’s fastest-selling new IPs in recent years.
Ghost of Yotei Is Moving Even Faster
By comparison, Ghost of Yotei reached 3.3 million copies sold just one month after its October 2025 release on PlayStation 5. If Sony’s statement means the sequel has already outpaced Tsushima over a similar window, it’s reasonable to assume that Yotei has already pushed beyond the original game’s 5 million sales milestone.
Whether it will ultimately match or exceed Tsushima’s long-term success remains to be seen. As of January 2022, Ghost of Tsushima had surpassed 8 million copies sold, setting a high bar for its successor.
Sony Navigates Hardware Challenges Alongside Strong Software Sales
Alongside celebrating Ghost of Yotei’s performance, Sony also addressed concerns around a potential – and currently unlikely – PlayStation 5 price increase. The company acknowledged that ongoing memory chip shortages continue to affect global electronics production, including PCs, TVs, and Nvidia GPUs.
Despite these challenges, Sony says it is actively negotiating with suppliers and working to secure enough components to meet PS5 demand without passing additional costs onto consumers.
Looking Ahead: PlayStation 6 Still Years Away
Further down the road, Sony is already planning for the future of the PlayStation brand. The company suggested that the PlayStation 6 is unlikely to launch before 2028, as it focuses on extending the PS5’s lifecycle and closely monitors the release window of Grand Theft Auto 6.
For now, Ghost of Yotei’s early success reinforces Sony’s strategy: premium first-party titles remain one of PlayStation’s strongest weapons , and this samurai saga is clearly cutting deep.
