Season 8 of Diablo 4 arrives on April 29, and it’s bringing major changes—not just to endgame content, but also to the entire battle pass system. Say goodbye to the old format and welcome The Reliquary, a revamped progression model that puts player choice and agency front and center.
Meet The Reliquary: A Fresh Take on Battle Passes
The new system breaks down rewards into multiple themed Reliquaries, allowing players to pursue exactly what interests them most. Here’s what to expect:
- The Core Seasonal Reliquary – This one’s free and includes goodies like:
- A new Town Portal cosmetic
- A slick weapon skin
- Mount cosmetics
- A bit of the premium currency, Platinum
- Other Reliquaries – These focus on:
- Armor cosmetics
- Weapon cosmetics
- “Beasts” (aka pets and mounts)
These are unlocked using Platinum and can be purchased individually.
Favor Tokens: Your New Key to Unlocks
Players now earn a currency called Favor Tokens by slaying monsters and completing quests. These tokens let you unlock any reward in any order within each Reliquary. Here’s how it works:
- Hold up to 99 Favor Tokens at once
- Items cost between 2–10 tokens
- Unlocking all rewards in a Reliquary grants a bonus item, free of token cost
This system gives you full control over your path—no more grinding through tiers of rewards you don’t care about.
Better Value for Players
Each individual Reliquary is cheaper than previous battle passes. Blizzard will also offer a 1,000 Platinum bundle that includes all Reliquaries for a given season—the same price as the old premium pass, but with far more flexibility.
Why the Change? Blizzard Explains
In a group interview with GameSpot, Diablo 4 Associate Game Design Director Colin Finer explained the motivation behind the overhaul:
“We got feedback that the old battle pass didn’t feel very Diablo,” Finer said. “Players were grinding through stuff they didn’t want, with no real agency. That’s not what Diablo is about. It’s about control—about doing it your way. That’s what The Reliquary delivers.”
He added that the goal is to empower players to chase the rewards they actually want, in true Diablo fashion.
What About Smoldering Ashes?
Previously, the battle pass awarded Smoldering Ashes, which enhanced Season Blessings—temporary buffs like XP boosts. These features aren’t gone! They’ve simply been moved into the Seasonal Journey system and function just as before.
Event Reliquaries & Crossovers Incoming
Blizzard is also introducing limited-time Event Reliquaries, offering special rewards outside of the core seasonal content. One big example? The upcoming crossover with the dark fantasy manga Berserk, launching May 6—and yes, it will integrate with the new system.
Final Thoughts
Season 8’s overhaul of the battle pass marks a major evolution for Diablo 4. With greater flexibility, better value, and more player-driven progression, The Reliquary feels like a win for fans. Whether you’re in it for cosmetics, mounts, or just more control over your grind, this update is shaping up to be one of the most player-friendly yet.
