The past and the future of Flyff Universe: An interview with the developer
Loic Saos, CEO at Sniegu Technologies, who's also the lead developer of Flyff Universe accepted our invitation for a small interview regarding Flyff Universe.
MMOHaven: Flyff was a remarkable MMORPG back in the day – how did you come up with the idea of Flyff Universe, and how long did the development take? Do you have a favorite feature or element in this reworked version of Flyff?
Loic Saos: As a computer science student, I was experimenting with new web technologies and thought they were now powerful enough to support heavy games.
Websites are cross-platform and they are really easy to access. Why not do the same for games: click on the link, enter your name and play instantly! That’s what I had in mind.
I started building a Flyff fangame because it was my first MMORPG and it was the perfect candidate for a browser game. The graphics are nice but not too heavy, and the gameplay is very casual.
It took 1 year to prototype the web game while I was studying at university; then 2 more years to reimplement all Flyff PC gameplay together with the original Flyff developers. One of my favorite features is the user interface which has different themes, lots of customization options, resizable parts and more than 15 languages available. Of course, the best feature is that we can just play Flyff anywhere, anytime, and on any device, just by visiting universe.flyff.com/play!
MMOHaven: Flyff Universe is a reimagined and reworked version of Flyff. What are the core gameplay differences in Flyff Universe? Is there any innovation in it that a Flyff veteran would be happy about?
Loic Saos: Flyff Universe returns to the origins of Flyff, starting from an old version of the game (version 7 launched in 2005).
The monsters are stronger and the gameplay is overall more challenging as there are not many power-ups available to make the player stronger. This encourages team play or actively using skills and items. Flyff veterans will appreciate the new flying combat features. There are more flying monsters and players can now use their skills when flying! PvP is also available in the air now. They would also be pleased with the reworked quests and boss fights giving more depth to the game, as well as the graphic overhaul and quality of life improvements.
MMOHaven: A smaller portion of the player base has already reached level 120. Do you have plans on raising the level cap in the future? We have also seen the new Summer roadmap, which looks promising – do you already have something in development for Winter, can we expect a similar patch and roadmap?
Loic Saos: Indeed, we plan to increase the level cap to 140 with the next summer update, along with a new region and a new high-level dungeon. But there will also be new pets that players can raise to any level to make their character stronger.
We have plans for a major winter update, which will bring new content and side activities to the game. Flyff has been around for nearly 20 years, and there’s a lot of content we can pick and revamp when needed; in addition to the many new ideas we have. So stay tuned!
Thank you Loic for answering our questions! We are eager to hear more about Flyff Universe’s upcoming content and expansions!
