Kingdom Hearts 3: The Magic Continues
Kingdom Hearts 3 came out 14 years after the second installment of the series. Inbetween, Square Enix spawned a whole series of prequels, spinoffs and upgrades. Is this game worth playing? Let’s...
Square-Enix did everything to make this game nostalgic and fresh at the same time. They upgraded the graphics, but the good old PlayStation 2 art style is visible. They knew they should change the overall style of the game because the fans are excited about the usual feel of this franchise. The game director always said it should have a fun element when creating a kingdom hearts game. Kingdom Hearts is good because of its fun gameplay and memorable characters. I’ve never had issues with Disney worlds and Disney characters. Most of my friends who played this game, enjoyed the Disney stuff.
It’s a hack and slash action role-playing game. You go into a group of appearing monsters and you fight them with your weapons or magic abilities. You get a lot of skills and abilities which you can utilize in the in-game menü. You can configure your teammates too what the AI shall do with them. If you leave the whole thing out, you can still progress. What I have learned about Kingdom Hearts in the last 20 years, you can pick up and play the story, nothing can stop you if you train with the monsters before you go the boss. Bosses are big and have a lof of health. If you are clever, you can manage it as well. This game is about having fun, not struggling. The story continues where KH2 left off. Sora returns as the main character, who is searching for his lost power. He has Donald Duck (which personally is my favorite character in the game) and Goofy as teammates. The party can have support characters up to 5. You can meet Maleficent and Pete as returning bad guys.
There are many Disney protagonists and antagonists returning in the game, except Final Fantasy characters, which was such a loss. I really loved in Kingdom Hearts 2 when Squall and Cloud battled against the bad guys side-by-side. I think it is a copyright issue or they thought it would be too many characters and they’ve left them out. They made new worlds as it should be, but there are returning worlds like Olympus and Twilight Town. They resemble the old ones, but they have new features. A lot of NPCs were put in which makes it look more realistic. In the old games, the gameplay area was too static. One or two characters were walking on the same path. Now players can see how citizens of Twilight Town live.
The graphics is incredible. Pirates of the Caribbean world, the gang has got pirates clothing and the ships and sea looks awesome. The same can be said about the worlds of Toy Story, Monsters Inc. (Pixar), Frozen, Tangled, and Big Hero 6 (Disney Animation Studio). The gang changes forms and clothing in every world as always. To the feelings of the world, there is always the music of Yoko Shimamura who is a brilliant video game music composer. We can listen to the music all the time in the game. About the gameplay.
It’s the same nostalgic great feeling when we were roaming around with Donald and Goofy support you in the fields and bashing heartless. Nothing has changed. It’s fun defeating Heartless with our keyblade. Mobs drop munnies (your cash) and items like potion and ether or other items you need. As party member, Donald has healing magic, Goofy the „Tank” abilities. There are world-based games too. In Pirates of the Caribbean, you have a pirate ship battle with heartless driven ships, in Twilight town, you can cook meals, it’s a game of dexterity and good timing. In different words, you can collect ingredients (Which is really trendy nowadays in this types of games) You can have funny minigames with Winnie the Pooh as well. When you travel the world, you have the Gummi ship once again as your traveling method. The game changes to a shooter and you have defeat heartless and usually a boss until you reach the world’s icon, which is represented by a planet with the world characteristic features.
The story. Breathtaking, but players need to play the best of the other game which came between 2 and this to understand what is going on, but as a gamer of the series and did not have the opportunity to play all the side-games, I have fun with the game. The gameplay and simplicity of the classic story elements as we protect the world from the baddies, make players forget that they don’t know anything about it.
However, if you want to play this game fair and square, you have the opportunity on PlayStation 4 or you can be old school by buying Nintendo 3DS, DS or PSP and play. It is really worth it. Kingdom Hearts is a game of amazing visuals, breathtaking story, fun gameplay and nice music. If you like action RPGs and you want to know how light fights the darkness, this is for you!
