Forge of Empires – Is it worth playing?
In the free strategy browser game Forge of Empires, you can build your medieval empire, defend yourself against enemies, form alliances, and master different historical epochs.
The first time you enter Forge of Empires, you’ll be captured by nostalgic memories of when you played a browser game several years ago, but the real surprise begins when the game starts itself. It clearly feels like you are looking at the classic Caesar or Pharaoh city-building game. These were the first biggest city-building games. They were operated with 2D graphics from an isometric view. They were creative and challenging, but they also nailed all ages before the PC screens. Perhaps this success brought the idea to Innogames, the creators of Forge of Empires, to make a city-building game that shows all of human history.
Gameplay of Forge of Empires
The isometric view is very detailed and pleasantly colorful. Deer walking in the woods, and bunnies jumping around in the meadow while you are scrolling through the city’s surroundings. You can watch the locals walking on the streets trying to figure out what to do with themselves. The buildings are also beautifully designed. As you examine the many small details of the hunting lodge, you notice that the hunter is just roasting some meat. The interface is well-made and easy to use. In the upper-right, it displays our age level and our resource material stocks. In the lower-left corner, you access the menus for construction, development, diplomacy, and maps. As soon as you click on something you want to build, its location in the city will appear and it will be built itself in a few seconds. Forge of Empires has great ambiance music using classic instruments and sometimes they put in bird sounds, kids laughing, and other miscellaneous sound effects.
Traditionally to this genre, there is a technology menu where you can see the tree of inventions. Here you can research things from gold and diamonds. Gold is given to you by your citizens, while diamond is a valuable resource you can get by finishing a quest or you can buy them in the shop of the game. The first technologies are the wheel and spear, but as you progress and move through historical ages, they become more and more complex. As our city grows, you realize you need to expand as well. To do this, you need to occupy areas on the map. You can use diplomacy but you can also attack.
The game offers several options when it comes to fighting. You can put the combat on auto-battle, but this is not really recommended because the AI can never settle the battle as well as the player. You can also buy the enemy gold and diamond. The best option is to fight manually. It is a turn-based strategy at its best. During the game, you can also meet the cities of other players. You can fight with the players or just trade. Sometimes very valuable and useful items come out of these encounters. So it’s worth talking to the other users.
Summary
I could recommend this to anyone, who would love to spend some time with a quality strategy browser game. Forge of Empires has countless possibilities: build hundreds of unique buildings, units, wonders of the world, and research new technologies. The game has regular updates and events, and it’s free-to-play!
