King of Fighters XIV Pros and Cons!
King of Figthers: One of the best fighting game series next to Street Fighter and Tekken. Let's see what KOF XIV has to offer!
SNK is a game company there is here since the ’90s and they made a lot of fighting games like Samurai Shodown, so they have a big experience of how a good game of combat should be. They have traditions with this franchise. They keep the characters the same like you have the American hero, Terry Bogard, the true Japanese fighter, Kusanagi Kyo and Asamiya Athena, who shots psychic projectiles since 1994.
And also, they make bosses extremely hard. There is even a meme on the internet as „SNK Boss syndrome” because it is really true. The final boss at the end of the arcade or story mode is always painfully hard.
What I liked about King of Fighters XIV
The graphics are amazing. They’ve found after much trying (KOF Maximum Impact series on PlayStation 2) how they design their characters in 3D. The character models do great in the environment.
The stages are well-designed, great looking. Good to fight on them. I have found the effects and sounds of hit kinda dull compared to older games, but that is a nitpick. Teams.
In a King of Fighters, it is a mandatory to know the teams. There are always 3 on 3 team battles in the SNK KOF series. Fans were satisfied because a lot of classic can be found. Japan Team with Kyo, Benimaru and Goro, Fatal Fury Team with Terry, Andy and Joe, The karate team with Ryo, Robert and Yuri, and so on. Every one of them is good-looking and playable. If you played one of the games, you can handle these characters. That is what is good about KoF. You learn how to do special moves, super moves, and a lot of combos, you have to learn only once. Sometimes they make new moves, but that does not mean the older and memorable special attacks must be gone.
During rounds, the game rewards you with artworks which you can find in the gallery menü of the game. This is a great feature because it defeats the repetitive nature of fighting games. You don’t fight only to get to the end. You are excited about what kind of artwork, photo or card the game gives you after winning the round.
There are some good new characters like Dinosaur King, who is a wrestler with a dinosaur mask on his head, or Nelson from the South America team who is a boxer. I also find that cute that one of the new female fighters is probably based on Kyari Pamyu Pamyu. She is called Sylvie Paula Paula and looks like every j-pop diva these days. She is absurd to play with. I enjoyed the changes in Team Korea. Master Kim did not team up with Chang of Choi (They made a different team for the first time), but with his old master, Gang Il, and that man’s wife Luong. I know this information because I beat the game with this team. The epilogue comics are cool and nostalgic. It’s KoF feeling all over it.
Let’s see the cons of King of Fighters XIV!
This game is incredibly dull and gives nothing to a veteran King of Fighters player. Not much variety in special moves and combos.
I do not understand the story itself. It is about an entity that is full of negative energies and wanders the world and it is related to Ash Crimson, the androgynous „anti-hero” of the franchise.
A lot of new characters are boring and uninspired. Moves are too easy to do, they are not good to see and boring to play. They tried to make the Asian boy stereotype for female players and sweet lolita for the guys and parody characters for troll players who like to commit crimes in online fights.
As an old fan of the game, I would like to see old characters fatal fury, last blade, samurai showdown or even world heroes. Instead, we get shameless rip-offs, like a girl with Nakoruru who looks like Sonson from Marvel vs Capcom 2, and at the border of plagium, we even get a pirate girl called Love Heart who looks like Ruby Heart, another Capcom character. I think the two companies still bash each other by ripping off character designs shamelessly. DLC. 6 characters and my problem is with that, they should be available from the start instead of ripping off people who don’t want to play the boring new faces in the roster.
Game features. Not much to say. Where is the time attack, challenge, color edit mode, at least there is a tutorial mode. It is a poor thing. If you are a new-comer to the series, try this out, because it is good for his own name, but for veterans, you should still prefer the old games like KOF2002 Ultimate Match or the Maximum Impact 2 (which is King of Fighters 2006 in Europe for some reason).
